YWCA EMERGENCY/HOMELESS SHELTER

Program PurposeProvide emergency shelter to homeless single women and women with children, males under the age of 6.  Families with older males are eligible for Family Shelter placement.  Housing is provided for up to 90 days.  The program provides food, clothing, and hygiene items on a needed basis. There is an on-site kitchen for residents to prepare their own food, and on-site laundry (coin operated machines).  Two social workers on staff provide case management to assess family needs and make appropriate referrals to address these issues while families seek safe & affordable permanent housing.

In 2011, YWCA shelters provided 29,502 nights of service
to 234 individuals, 45% of whom were children.

Eligibility & Program Requirements:

  • Homeless per HUD’s definition
  • Low income with no resources to secure housing
  • Pass criminal record check
  • Cannot have been in YWCA shelter in previous 6 months
  • Cannot have been in YWCA shelter three previous times in the preceding 6 years
  • Must agree to actively work on a housing plan with additional services if needed, to help stabilize the family as they move from shelter into housing (transitional, permanent, or permanent supportive)
  • No alcohol use on premises
  • No drug use
  • No weapons
  • No guests in resident rooms
  • Cannot be placed in shelter after hours or on weekends.

Cost:  Program cost based on income, does not exceed 30% of income
